چکیده

It is widely recognized that segregation processes are often the result of complex nonlinear dynamics. Empirical analyses of complex dynamics are however rare, because there is a lack of appropriate empirical modeling techniques that are capable of capturing complex patterns and nonlinearities. At the same time, we know that many social phenomena display nonlinearities. In this article, we introduce a new modeling tool in order to partly fill this void in the literature. Using data of all secondary schools in Stockholm county during the years 1990 to 2002, we demonstrate how the methodology can be applied to identify complex dynamic patterns like tipping points and multiple phase transitions with respect to segregation. We establish critical thresholds in schools’ ethnic compositions, in general, and in relation 1 School of Politics and International Studies, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK 2 Institute for Analytical Sociology, Linköping University, Norrköping, Sweden 3 Department of Mathematics, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden Corresponding Author: Viktoria Spaiser, School of Politics and International Studies, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK. Reliability analysis of repairable systems using system dynamics modeling and simulation

Repairable standby system’s study and analysis is an important topic in reliability. Analytical techniques become very complicated and unrealistic especially for modern complex systems. There have been attempts in the literature to evolve more realistic techniques using simulation approach for reliability analysis of systems. This paper proposes a hybrid approach called as Markov system ...

Complex Dynamical Systems Theory

Complexity is a systemic property. Adaptive evolving systems like ethnic cliques or complex social situations such as “knife crimes” are best understood as dynamic networks of interactions and relationships, not mere aggregates of static entities that can by analyzed by separately identifying and enumerating them. By definition, relata do not exist in individual particles, only in their inter-r...

Voting Contagion

Social influence plays an important role in human behavior and decisions. The sources of influence can be generally divided into external, which are independent of social context, or as originating from peers, such as family and friends. An important question is how to disentangle the social contagion by peers from external influences. While a variety of experimental and observational studies p...

Water Resources Management in the South of Kerman Province Using the System Dynamics Model

Integrated water resources management is recognized as one of the main needs of any society due to population growth and technological advancement. To implement integrated water resources management, modeling of this system is essential. On the other hand, water resources systems are highly complex and affected by various factors that are very difficult to identify and determine their role in w...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

Complex Leadership in Healthcare: A Scoping Review

Background Nowadays, health systems are generally acknowledged to be complex social systems. Consequently, scholars, academics, practitioners, and policy-makers are exploring how to adopt a complexity perspective in health policy and system research. While leadership and complexity has been studied extensively outside health, the implications of complexity theories for the study of leader...
